Nita M. Lowey 21st Century Community Learning Centers
Welcome to Long Prairie-Grey Eagle’s Nita M. Lowey 21st Century Community Learning Centers. The centers provide academic and enrichment opportunities during non-school hours (school-year and summer) for students in the elementary and secondary schools. Programs are designed to enhance children’s lives academically, socially, culturally, emotionally, and physically in a safe and familiar environment.
Collaborative partnerships provide support services and opportunities to
1. help students meet state and local standards in reading, math, and
science,
2. offer students a broad array of high-quality enrichment activities that
complement regular academic programs, and
3. offer literacy and other educational services to families of
participating students.
Transportation for afterschool programs and Thunder Summer Academy are provided. Scholarships are available for enrichment programs.
Key components include:
- rigorous and relevant academic services in literacy, math, and science;
- enrichment and active learning opportunities in art, music, STEM, theatre, culinary arts, and wellness;
- youth leadership programs including Link Crew, WEB, and advisories;
- family engagement activities including Parent Camp, family nights, community celebrations,Lights on Afterschool, and parent/community advisory; and
- college and career readiness programs including work-based learning, nursing assistant certification, and Scrubs Camp.
Expected outcomes and benefits include:
- improved academic performance in math and reading,
- reduction in the achievement gap between students who are economically disadvantaged and students who are not,
- improved attendance rate,
- improved social emotional outcomes,
- increased number of students who are career and college ready, and
- increased graduation rates.
